"My Green Kite"
Peter Himmelman

new at bcm.com

CD - $11.99

As parents we know that it can be difficult to find children's music that speaks to what we call the "Older Kids" - those children seven and up. But I can testify that Peter Himmelman knows how to reach this group. Each of Peter's recordings for children is filled with songs that are, first and foremost, musically hip enough to get these kids to sit up and notice. They are also lyrically sophisticated and thematically intriguing and always all wrapped up in a well-crafted, catchy song. One listen to "My Green Kite" and you will know why kids love his music! Age focus: 7 and up.

Gunnar Madsen's follow-up to the hugely successful "Old Mr. Mackle Hackle" is filled with his trademark wacky wit and keen-eyed awareness. Only Gunnar could write a song about a boy named "Tuna Fish," or explore the lighter side of attention deficit disorder with "Welcome To My Fog." He also proudly exclaims his feelings to all in "I Am Loved." You will also enjoy the only non-original song, a picturesque version of "Home On The Range." His 12 original songs go right to the heart of childhood and feature some of the best songwriting you will find in children's music! Age focus: 7 and up.

The best children's music is music that we enjoy as much as our kids do . . . Beyond performing songs which are simply irresistable, Rick's gift is in wrapping meaningful themes in a fun-filled musical package. This recording is musically very-hip, child-centered, respectful of childhood and gets better with every listening. You will especially appreciate how Rick tends to the emotional needs of his young listeners. Another great Rick Scott recording you must "share" with your children. Age focus: 7 and up.

A natural storyteller, Zak Morgan's debut record is filled with amusing and sophisticated story-songs bound to keep adults just as entertained as the children. These unique and witty songs contain a good amount of clever wordplay -- supported by his glossary of terms (located in the CD booklet) designed to help listeners understand the lyrics and reinforce the jokes. Morgan's songs cover the spectrum from thought provoking to silly and gross -- but the language is always rich, colorful and insists that we raise the vocabulary bar for kids. Children will look at the world a little differently after a trip to Zak Morgan's Bloomland. Age focus: 7 and up.

Children enjoy singing along with storybooks and it is an added bonus when you find recordings that follow, word-for-word, the text in picture books. Of these ten songs, four are musical adaptations of (very musical) picture books written by Danny, in collaboration with his wife Kim (under her pen name of Kin Eagle). You'll also love the music version of Danny's critically acclaimed, Africa Calling, exotically illustrated by Kim. Do you remember the tongue twister "How Much Wood Would A Woodchuck Chuck?" Everyone will be creating their own rhymes when they hear this fun and clever adaptation. Age focus: 5-9 years.

We agree with the reviewer who said, "With 'Old Mr. Mackle Hackle,' Gunnar Madsen offers up some of the freshest, funniest, and most inventive fare in the ever-expanding crop of children's music." It sparkles with joyous and upbeat lyrics spanning the gamut from opera-esque ("Tiny Mosquito") to Motown ("The Evelyn Way") to talkin' country blues ("Chicken Road"). Gunnar's gift for writing memorable, singable songs is obvious here as his subject matter ranges from pesky siblings ("I'm A Little Twerp") to meat-eating dinosaurs ("Born To Chew") to the joys of summer ("Summertime Is Here") to the imaginative ("Elephant Traffic Jam"). It's right on target -- smart, witty and lots o' fun! Age focus: 7 and up.

Tom Chapin has many fine recordings for children and families, so to decide which CD would be our first recommendation was a fun challenge. In classic Tom Chapin style, "Around The World And Back Again" is filled with fun, humor and memorable melodies which also lightly touch on important issues. The album celebrates what makes the world's people unique by exploring such differences as food, language, clothes and, or course, music . . . at the same time, underscoring the many ways in which we are alike. Some standouts include: "What Is A Didjeridoo?," "The Wonderful World of Yes," "A Forest In The Rain," and "Gonna Go To Borneo." Age focus: 7 and up.
