LINER NOTES

I've been a grown-up actor for about thirty years now. In a hundred plays, movies, and TV shows, I've had to learn thousands of lines, rhymes and even lyrics. And you know what? I'VE FORGOTTEN ALL OF THEM! So why is it then that I can sing so many songs by heart that I first heard when I was three? four? five? Maybe it's because a kid is eager to learn and extra impressionable. Maybe it's because his young brain still has plenty of vacant space available. But in my case, it's probably because I grew up in a house full of music and heard so many fantastic songs. A lot of those songs are on this album. Jazzy tunes with ingenious lyrics, they were originally performed by some of my first idols, great showmen like Kanny Kaye, Cab Calloway, Allan Sherman, Michael Flanders & Donald Swann. The songs bring to lively musical life a whole menagerie of storybook characters: singing pigs, dancing fish, ornery triplets, hippo sweethearts, a punctilious gnu, a mathematical inchworm, and Otto Zilch, the jockey-clad explorer (oh yes, some of them are pretty outrageous). Only a few of the songs were actually written for children, but all of them are songs that children will love. And if those kids are like me, someday they'll grow up and sing them to their own kids. By heart. - John Lithgow
